The wise manager does not only hire people he knows from his previous jobs

The wise manager does not only hire people he knows from his previous jobs.

That’s not wise hiring, that’s nepotism.

I have heard of managers who, after they moved to a new job, started off by hiring people they knew from their previous jobs. In a few years, their reporting chains were filled with people they already knew.

The good people in the company, meanwhile, left.

Some people look at this and say, oh, he must be a good manager, and so all those people moved along with him.

No, a lot of people moved with him because they knew him well, and so they could play the same familiar game all over again.

Don’t be that manager.

There are good, talented people everywhere. Not only those that have reported to you in the past.
